Option #1: 100% Ownership
The vacationer buys his/her own place along with all the accessories. For many people though, ownership comes with its own drawbacks! Here are a few:
- It's expensive.
- You have to maintain the property.
- You're tied down by the demands of that property.
- Even if you own the property you still have to buy the accessories to enjoy the experience.

|
Option #2: House/Condo Rental
The vacationer rents a house or condo. This option leaves you to 'piece' your dream together by yourself, which doesn't always go as planned! The problems with this option are:
- You gain no equity.
- It requires planning.
- It's decorated to someone else's tastes.
- Boat rental, etc. is a separate transaction.
- Availability may be limited.
|
|
Option #3: Time Share Ownership
The vacationer buys into a time-share. This sometimes leads to your dream getting lost in the confusion of so many members. The options can also be less than ideal for these reasons:
- Too many people are sharing it.
- Decorations may not match your tastes.
- Limited availability for the investment.
- It's a low liquidity investment.
- You have very little control.
|
|
Option #4: Resort Hotel
The vacationer simply checks into a resort hotel whenever he/she wants to get away. Sometimes this works out great, yet it costs more when done frequently. With this option you can also end up with some of the following issues:
- You gain no equity.
- It's less private.
- You can't decorate to your taste.
- It's expensive!
- You may not always get your choice of views.
